Scuba instruction has remained part of Darrell Seale’s life alongside his work in aerospace and defense, nonprofit organizations, and the community where he lives. An active certified instructor based in Abu Dhabi, UAE, he has combined teaching with personal diving and volunteer service. He has certified students, worked with veterans and served in leadership roles with several diving organizations and nonprofits over the years.
Darrell Seale developed his interest in diving alongside military service and a later career in aerospace and defense. The sport eventually provided an opportunity to combine an established skill with volunteer work. He taught students, served on diving-organization boards and helped lead a nonprofit supporting wounded and disabled veterans. These responsibilities differed from his professional employment but often took place during the same years.
His work with veterans was particularly relevant to his background as an Air Force officer. He participated in groups that used scuba in their activities with veterans and took on responsibilities beyond ordinary recreational diving. He helped govern nonprofits in some positions and taught participants directly in others. His continuing work as an instructor belongs to a longer history of involvement in both kinds of activity, which developed through several separate organizations.
Darrell Seale’s Teaching Experience and Volunteer Instruction
Darrell Seale’s scuba teaching background includes the certification of more than 300 students. His instructor history dates to 1999, with credentials from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Scuba Diving International (SDI). Student certification has been a sustained part of his involvement in the sport, alongside personal diving and organizational service.
The student certifications reflect work directly with learners rather than organizational administration. As an instructor, Darrell Seale has used credentials associated with two scuba-training organizations, PADI and SDI. He also used his diving experience while volunteering. Teaching in these settings connected an established recreational interest with opportunities to participate in programs run for veterans.
Darrell Seale volunteered as a scuba instructor with Divers 4 Heroes, an organization that supports veterans through diving. In that role, he brought his teaching experience into a volunteer setting focused on people with a military background. He used his diving instruction to serve fellow veterans.
The volunteer instruction associated with Darrell Seale developed alongside other nonprofit commitments. He served on the Board of Directors of Divers 4 Heroes from 2010 through 2013. During a broader period of community involvement, he also received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award in each year from 2010 through 2014.
Patriot Divers and the Purpose of Volunteer Service
Darrell Seale held the roles of Co-Founder, Vice President and Instructor with Patriot Divers from 2014 through 2018. The nonprofit uses scuba diving as a means of therapy and reintegration for wounded and disabled veterans. Its mission places the activity within a program centered on service members’ lives beyond their military duties.
Darrell Seale’s role with Patriot Divers combined organizational leadership with instruction. He taught participants while also fulfilling his responsibilities as vice president of the nonprofit. The position brought together his involvement in diving, his experience with organizations, and his connection to the military community.
Patriot Divers specifically served wounded and disabled veterans, while his earlier instruction covered students learning the sport more generally. This distinction shaped the setting in which he taught, although his instructor qualifications remained relevant in both. His responsibilities with Patriot Divers also included organizational leadership, so his participation was not limited to time spent teaching.
From 2009 through 2014, he also served on the Lockheed Martin Dive Club’s Board of Directors. That position connected organizational participation with a recreational interest during his years in the aerospace and defense industry.
The diving affiliations formed part of a wider volunteer record. He also served on the National Kidney Foundation’s Board of Directors from 2015 through 2017, showing that his nonprofit involvement extended to a health-related organization outside diving. This appointment differed from his direct work as a scuba instructor, adding another example of participation at board level. The roles covered separate areas of community service.
Scuba Instruction and Community Life in Abu Dhabi
Darrell Seale moved to Abu Dhabi in 2014 at Lockheed Martin’s request and remained in the UAE after retiring from aerospace and defense. The city became his home beyond the employment that first brought him there. His community involvement has continued alongside active scuba instruction.
Darrell Seale’s relocation also placed him within a new network of local organizations. Alongside instruction, his community participation included sporting and recreational activities and service within business organizations. These forms of involvement did not depend on his continuing employment in aerospace and defense. They describe the broader setting in which he has maintained his diving interests.
His involvement close to home includes participation in his building’s homeowners association. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Chamber of Commerce Abu Dhabi from 2018 through 2019. He brought his business experience to an organization based in his adopted city.
At the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019, he joined a Unified Sports volleyball team with athletes who had and did not have disabilities. He also presented more than 50 medals to competitors. That participation was separate from scuba instruction but reflected his continuing interest in inclusive sporting activities in his home city.
Local cultural and recreational activities also remain part of his life in the UAE. Outside diving, his interests include international travel, with visits to 142 countries, and membership in Mensa. These activities differ from both his professional work and organized volunteer responsibilities, adding further context to his life in Abu Dhabi after retirement.
